Digital Video for Visual Artists

Increasingly digital media are becoming a staple of the vocabulary used by contemporary artists. Focusing on digital video, this weekend course is aimed at artists and art educators who want to utilise video and digital media as part of their practice or teaching. Covering elements of the theory of the use of video by artists and also strategies for its use, participants will also undertake practical exercises in production and using video on the web. Participants will be introduced to both simple production tools and professional equipment, and some of the wealth of online resources available both in terms of artist networks and free production tools. Once participants have completed this intensive primer course, they will be armed with the basic knowledge to explore digital media independently.

No previous experience of digital media is required,  but  a reasonable level of computer literacy is essential, including familiarity with the internet.

This intensive course runs over a weekend and classes take place at Modern Art Oxford from 10am – 7pm on Saturday and 12 - 5pm Sunday.

TUTOR: Chris Oakley

Biog: A UK based artist working with video and digital imaging, Chris Oakley's work is concerned with how media and technology shape our experiences of the world. From the intervention of the camcorder in the tourist's first-hand experience to the engineered narratives of reality television, he explores processes of fictionalising material captured from life in an analogy to the mass media's increasingly uniform treatment of fiction and the factual. He is also interested in the ideas of collective memory and shared experience as they have been shaped by the mass media, where our sense of shared experience is at odds with our isolated experience of consumption.
